Fortunately, the career outlook for this field is excellent. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) predicts employment of medical assistants will grow 19 percent through 2029 which is faster than the national average for many other professions. Since jobs in the healthcare industry are in demand, the pay and benefits are also good by comparison.

Being Part of a Team

As a medical assistant you’ll work with colleagues who care about delivering quality patient care as much as you do. Some careers can make you feel isolated like you are doing everything on your own. While everyone in a healthcare facility has their own job to do, there is usually always someone nearby to offer support. Medical assistants are a valuable, respected member of the healthcare team and frequently work alongside physicians and nurses. They are team players willing to do the work necessary to ensure patients are receiving high quality care and the facility is running smoothly behind the scenes.

Predictable Schedule

Predictable hours may sound impossible in the medical field, but many medical assistants work in physician offices or clinics. Working in a clinic means you only work when the clinic is open, which typically only operates during standard business hours. Having a predictable schedule is helpful in maintaining a healthy work life balance. It also means you’re much less likely to miss your child’s soccer game or wonder when you might get called in to work next. If you’ve ever worked a job with a variable schedule, having a predictable schedule can be a big plus.

Opportunities for Advancement

If you decide to become a medical assistant, you should know that the opportunities for advancement are plentiful. Certification is the first step in advancing your career, so it’s important that you attend an accredited medical assisting program as only those who complete an accredited program are eligible to take the exam to become certified. The medical assisting career path is paved with opportunities like specializing in a specific area of medicine, continuing your education to become a nurse, transitioning into an administrative role, and so much more.
