Is a Career in Teaching the Right Fit for You?

Posted On Jul 24, 2020

Young children in a classroom.

A career in teaching is both challenging and rewarding. Teachers make positive impacts on the daily lives of children, making it both an important and fulfilling career.

Teachers have a lot of responsibilities on their plate. In addition to teaching academic skills, teachers must also teach students how to socialize with others and how to behave appropriately and work hard to achieve their goals.

If you are looking for a career where you can make a real impact on the lives of children, then you should consider earning a degree in early childhood education.

Here are some questions to ask yourself when deciding if teaching is the right fit for you:

Am I Creative?

While creativity is something that can be taught, it helps to have a creative mindset beforehand. Being creative helps one to become a better problem solver in all aspects of their life and work and allows you to see things differently and become better equipped to handle uncertainty. Creative people are able to deal with uncertainty more effectively because they’re able to adapt their way of thinking to solve challenges and problems.

Am I Curious?

Curious teachers develop curious learners. Curious people constantly seek out new technology, research, and ideas to better help them explore and discover creative and innovative ways to effectively educate their students.

Am I Good at Communicating?

Teachers need to build strong communication skills as they must enjoy being around others and interacting with them. Teaching is a job which requires constant interaction with other people, so if you aren’t comfortable communicating with others, then teaching might be difficult or uncomfortable for you.

Am I Compassionate?

Good teachers are kind and caring and genuinely care about their students and their success. Without these characteristics, teaching can start to feel like a chore after a while.

Am I Patient?

It’s no secret that working with young children can be frustrating or challenging at times. If you lose your temper easily, then working with young children in a school setting might not be the right fit for you. Good teachers are patient and understanding and are able to keep a calm and positive demeanor around their students, even when things get hectic or challenging.

Am I Flexible?

Flexibility and adaptability are both very important qualities for teachers to possess. Teaching requires a willingness to accept and adapt to changes and unforeseen situations very quickly, sometimes without notice. Flexibility and adaptability are especially important in teaching because you must be willing to adjust your teaching methods and embrace change, especially when something isn’t working.

How Long Does It Take to Become a Teacher?

Earning a degree in early childhood education is typically a two-year program and includes quarters with four start dates a year in the Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer. Many programs offer day and evening classes to accommodate student work schedules and family life.

What Can I Do with a Degree in Early Childhood Education?

There are endless possibilities and opportunities when it comes to deciding on career options with an early education degree.

Some popular choices include becoming a preschool teacher, owning and operating their own childcare center or in-home childcare business, becoming an assistant director or a director of a childcare facility, working in their local school district as a paraprofessional, or becoming a family resource worker, just to name a few.
