A successful nurse is tenacious and gregarious. They are people who love their jobs and excel in their work. A big part of being a good nurse is being able to stay calm and collected. As a registered nurse dealing with injuries or illness a calm demeanor helps patients through stressful times. There are six other essential characteristics that make a person a great registered nurse.

Six Characteristics to Make You a Successful Registered Nurse

Nurses are good at their job because they love working in health care and enjoy the work they perform by helping others. For some, the nursing profession is not a good fit as they don't have the six characteristics needed to be a successful caregiver. Ask yourself if you have what it takes and if these characteristics describe you.

Tenacity

Being a registered nurse means you have a firm hold on your principles and determination to carry out duties to your highest potential. You have a firm hold in topics such as chemistry, nutrition, psychology, and a strong will to memorize the material. This information will serve you well in hectic environments.

Patient

Patients often worsen their conditions by not following their doctor's orders. They will not take medications as prescribed or cannot follow basic directions given to them. Nurses need a lot of patience to deal with people and their various positions in life. There is also a lot of paperwork to fill out that needs an extra amount of patience as well.

Optimism

A patient will heal better in a positive environment. Nurses who display a lot of optimism will share this with their patients and allow them to heal faster by having a proper mood.

Empathy

Many times people who witness tragedy too often become desensitized to the pain of others. They turn patients into numbers and symptoms and forget about the person underneath all that pain. As a nurse, you will need to be in tune with your patients to provide them the best care. Empathy will help you communicate and understand each patient's personality to know what they are experiencing.

Friendly

Hospitals, clinics, and especially emergency rooms see a lot of patients.  Nurses are looked to for comfort to help them get through whatever tragedy has brought them there. You have to like meeting people and enjoy cheering them no matter how chaotic the environment might get. Nurses have the most contact with patients, who will be in all various states of mind, and they need to be friendly, warm, and sociable to deal with them.

Methodical

There many duties required of the registered nurse. They play a variety of roles from filling out papers, taking medical notes, and most importantly caring for their patients. It requires a methodical person to deal with their patient while filling out medical forms. Some people say nursing is an incredibly tough job, but it is also extremely rewarding.

High Employment Opportunities

The Baby Boomers are getting older, and this is showing an increase in the need for health care workers. Registered nurses are one of the areas with the highest employment, yet many do not understand the shortage in this field.
