Why Are Nurses in Such High Demand in Today's Job Market?

Posted On Apr 19, 2016

In this ever-growing and fast-paced world people everywhere are facing a huge range of health challenges and issues. As such, there is always a tremendous need for nursing professionals. When an individual decides to go into the nursing field, it shows a strength of character, an impressive level of commitment, and desire a to make a difference in others’ lives. Nurses provide services that no other professional can, making a tremendous difference in the lives of patients. However, today there is a nursing shortage. We have far fewer nurses than we need, and that’s a problem for patients across the globe. However, for those looking to enter the nursing profession this shortage can actually be a benefit.

A Lack of Nurses

Currently hospitals all over the world are having a very hard time finding the right amount of nurses. Many hospitals cannot seem to find applicants that are trained properly, and hiring inexperienced nurses can of course be hugely problematic. The number of people going into nursing has dropped by more than 35% in recent years, leading to a smaller pool of applicNurse6.jpgants for hospitals to draw from. This is due to a number of reasons, one of the most prominent being a lack of nursing faculty at many nursing schools across the country. Whereas some states, like Ohio, are experiencing a growth in nursing education, others are severely understaffed.

Reversing the Shortage

Reversing the current shortage of nurses is no easy task. Yet it's also important to remember that when it comes to the shortage of nurses and nursing staff there are many options to consider. First and for most, the concept of appealing to both genders will widen the potential applicant pool. Both males and females should be encouraged to become nurses, even though it is commonly (and incorrectly) viewed as female-centric profession. This shortage can also be partially reversed by appealing to those with a diversified background. People with other degrees can bring an interesting dynamic and perspective to the field of nursing. These are just two ways by which the nursing field itself can potentially see real growth in the coming years.

A Career With Many Benefits

Working in the nursing field can and will provide a wide variety of benefits. It provides a long lasting career that is both personally and professionally rewarding, as well as a great salary, benefits and a whole lot more. Nurses are a fundamental ally when it comes to the people they serve and work with on a day-to-day basis.
